— The Interview

01 / Identity

Who are you?

Matthieu Mallein, copywriter and communications consultant based in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

I am Franco-Canadian, grew up in the Pacific and Asia, and work fluently in both French and English.

I am married, father to two daughters, and the owner of two cats and a dog. Though that last detail probably won't affect your project.

02 / Background

What is your background?

I have been working in marketing and communications for over twenty years.

I've collaborated with journalists, led teams, and managed internal and external communications for various organizations.

This path led me to craft web copy, emails, campaigns, and strategic documents that required both a deep understanding of complex situations and the ability to articulate them clearly.

03 / Profession

What do you do, concretely?

I specialize in copywriting: I transform an offer, an expertise, or an idea into clear, persuasive, and action-oriented messages.

I write landing pages, sales pages, email sequences, newsletters, ad copy, calls to action, and brand messaging.

I also audit and restructure existing copy to identify friction points that slow down reading, weaken the message, or stop visitors from taking the next step.

Copywriting is writing with a purpose: to clarify, build trust, generate buy-in, evoke emotion, or drive action.
04 / Results

What do clients gain?

Messages that help your visitors understand your offer, connect with it, and confidently take action.

Depending on the project, this means a clearer website, smoother navigation, emails read to the end, consistent brand messaging, and natural calls to action.

05 / Process

How does it work?

It depends on the project.

A one-off audit doesn't require the same approach as recurring support, and a sales page isn't built like an automated onboarding sequence.

In every case, I start by getting to know you: your offer, your audience, your goals, and the challenges you're solving.

I will likely ask a lot of questions at the beginning. It's essential to produce accurate, relevant, and compelling copy.

06 / Projects

Who do you work with?

I don't restrict myself to a single niche.

Some industries are more familiar to me, but I enjoy exploring new fields and I pick up concepts quickly.

What interests me most is the big picture: what you are trying to achieve, for whom, why, and under what constraints.

That is usually what determines if a collaboration makes sense.

07 / Approach

Why not make more noise?

It's a deliberate choice.

Many writers host conferences, publish books or courses, post constantly on social media, and send daily newsletters.

I prefer to focus my energy on writing, thinking, and delivering work for my clients. If I spend my time managing my own social channels and producing daily content, it directly reduces the focus I can give to your project.

And that's probably not what you're looking for.

"A great line won't save a bad offer. But poor copy can certainly sabotage a great one."
